San Miguel de Allende is a small colonial city (~170,000 population) in the central highlands of Guanajuato state, built on a history of attracting American artists and retirees. Both cities have decent private healthcare. Mérida has a significant advantage in scale: multiple full-service private hospitals with complete specialist coverage, cardiac surgery, oncology, orthopedics — all available locally. San Miguel, being smaller, requires travel to León or Querétaro for some specialist care. For retirees with complex health needs, Mérida's medical infrastructure is clearly superior.
Real estate investment potential
San Miguel's real estate market is mature and largely priced in — the "discovery" premium is mostly gone. Mérida's market, while growing fast, still has zones with genuine upside.
