Best Beaches Near Mérida, Yucatán — Complete Guide 2026

Mérida is just 35 km from the Gulf of Mexico coast, making beach day trips exceptionally easy. Unlike the Caribbean coast (Cancún, Tulum), Yucatán's Gulf Coast is calmer, less commercialized, and often completely empty outside Mexican holiday seasons — a different kind of beach experience that many visitors prefer once they discover it.

Gulf of Mexico vs Caribbean — what's different

Before choosing a beach, it helps to understand what you're getting:

For families with small children or anyone who just wants to swim in calm water and eat fresh seafood, the Gulf Coast wins easily. For snorkeling, coral reefs, or Instagram-worthy turquoise waters, you need the Caribbean.

Progreso — the classic choice (35 km, 35 min)

The main beach town for Mérida residents. 6.5 km of malecón, dozens of seafood restaurants, calm water, and easy bus access from the city center.

Sisal — the authentic fishing village (60 km, 50 min)

Sisal was Yucatán's main port before Progreso was built. Today it's a quiet fishing village with a long beach, a historic fortress (Castillo de San Felipe) and very few tourists.

Telchac Puerto — wind and waves (75 km, 1h)

The most popular beach town east of Progreso, known for stronger winds that make it ideal for kiteboarding and windsurfing. Better water clarity than Progreso in many conditions.

Chicxulub Puerto — the expat haven (42 km, 40 min)

East of Progreso, Chicxulub Puerto is where many American and Canadian expats have their beach houses. Quieter, more residential, with a good local seafood scene.

Dzilam de Bravo — the wild option (110 km, 1.5h)

The least-visited and most remote beach on this list. A small fishing community accessible only by car, with virtually zero tourist infrastructure and a pristine natural environment including flamingos, mangroves and pristine water.
